He did not care to ponder the answer or see any reason to. It was not some grand plan of the universe. His psyche would not reveal some grand architect of the world, nor even a puppet to a local civilization. It is not a Kantian ethical law. It was a simple question, hard to answer but unaltered by his opinion.
